Because as consumers we like to compare similar titles, Dragon Ball Legends does not replicate Dragon Ball FighterZ in a more portable form, but that would be an unrealistic expectation when the respective hardware is compared. Dragon Ball Legends does, however, seem to provide a competent touchscreen fighter that captures the fast paced mayhem of the franchise and some of their more popular video games. Dragon Ball Legends is a free-to-play fighter that features optional in-app purchases. It's slated for release sometime in summer and will be available in 52 countries.
In its Q3 earnings call (the same call during which EA talked about the power of next-gen consoles ), EA revealed that the mobile game isn't being developed in-house; instead, EA partnered up with a Chinese company to both develop Apex Legends mobile for a global release and distribute it in China. According to EA CFO Blake Jorgensen, "Rolling mobile out in China, you need to have a partner, and we’re—as we’ve said in the prepared remarks today—we’re working with a partner there, and we’re very excited about the opportunity. That partner is also helping us develop a mobile Apex for the globe—more to come on that in terms of timing." Trying to imagine carrying out the intricate controls most 2D fighters require for special moves and complex combos is mildly perplexing, but Dragon Ball Legends employs a more simplistic approach. The player is able to dodge attacks and move about the screen by the use of a virtual thumbstick on the touch screen and attack by tapping on different attack cards. It sounds a bit strange to use a card based system for something as frenetic as a Dragon Ball Z face off, but surprisingly this approach works quite well.
